What is an NHS Health Check?
The NHS Health Check is a free check-up for people aged 40 to 74. They are designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease and diabetes. This will then help to lower your risk of developing such health conditions.
If you’re aged over 65, you will also be given information about the symptoms of dementia. You can also receive details of local services that provide support for dementia.
This check-up takes 20 to 30 minutes, during which a health professional will ask you some questions about your lifestyle and carry out a few simple tests. They will check your blood pressure, height, weight, BMI (to see if your weight is healthy), waist measurement, cholesterol levels and type 2 diabetes risk.

Even if you feel completely fine, your risk of developing certain health problems increases as you get older. An NHS Health Check can help spot early signs of these conditions and show you how to reduce your risk. We can support you in making simple changes to stay healthy.
Who can have an NHS Health Check?
- If you’re aged 40 to 74 and living in Staffordshire
- If you haven’t had an NHS Health Check in the last 5 years
- If you don’t have any pre-existing health conditions such as:
- stroke
- diabetes
- kidney disease
- heart condition (including diagnosed high blood pressure)
- high cholesterol
